
QU Women's Tennis Shines in First Day of Quinnipiac Invitational

Hamden, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's tennis freshman Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) kicked off the Quinnipiac Invitational Friday afternoon with a team-high three individual victories, the only Bobcat to go 3-0 on the first day of competition.
The Bobcats sent the doubles team of Lohaphaisan and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) to the Flight "A" doubles semifinals while all four singles players advanced to the second round of the tournament in their respective singles flights.
Opening up the day with doubles, Lohaphaisan and Horton picked up two strong victories in doubles to reach the semifinals. The Bobcat pair took on Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco and defeated the Friars doubles pair, 6-3. After advancing to the second round, Horton and Lohaphaisan faced off against Lindsey Post and Katie DiRienzo and battled to a 7-5 victory, avoiding a tiebreaker set.
Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) teamed up with Drexel's Jennifer White in doubles competition and the pair won their first match together against Providence's Risa Takenaka and Katherine Ryan, 6-3. Mircea and White nearly advanced to the Flight "B" semifinals, narrowly falling to Katie Kim and Isabell Klingert in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). The final Bobcats' double team to compete in the Quinnipiac Invitational of Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Adrian Young (Orange Village, Ohio) also competed in Flight "B" doubles, but fell to Sacred Heart's Paige Olson and Claudia Ruiz, 6-2.
Lu turned right back around to play singles early in the afternoon and picked up her first victory of the day, defeating Fairfield's Nicole Aragones in straight sets in Flight "A" action, 6-0, 6-3, for her first career singles victory.
Lohaphaisan also picked up her first career singles victory for the Bobcats as she took on Sacred Heart's Taylor Gurda in Flight "B" singles, advancing to the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
In Flight "C" action, Mircea became the third freshmen Bobcat to record her first career singles victory as she came back to defeat Providence's Brooke Burnside in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Rounding out the day, Young completed the trend of all four freshmen recording their first singles victories as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory of Drexel's White in Flight "D."
The Quinnipiac Invitational kicks back up again on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 9 A.M. with the semifinals of doubles starting of the day before main draw singles and consolation singles are played for the remainder of the day.
