
QU Men's Tennis Sends Two Doubles Teams to Semifinals, Three Singles Players to Quarterfinals at Connecticut State Championships

New Haven, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team had a successful first day of the Connecticut State Championships hosted by Yale University as two doubles teams reached their flight semifinals and three Bobcats' singles players reached their flight quarterfinals.
Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) led all Bobcats' with four victories on the day to go 4-0 while five different Bobcats earned three victories in the first day of competition.
The Connecticut State Championships opened up with Flight "A" doubles which saw Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and van Biezen pick up two wins to advance to the semifinals. The duo opened up the day with a tough match against rival Marist's Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher, 6-4. The next match did not get any easier for Kuwert and van Biezen, as they entered a long tiebreaker with Xavier Gonzalez and Samuel Beren but came away with the victory, 7-6 (6).
Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) faced off against a Marist pair of their own, defeating Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta, 6-4. Ezaka and Haraguchi nearly advanced to the semifinals of Flight "A," but came up just short against Fairfield's Dylan Appel and Brad Orban, 7-5. Ezaka and Haraguchi will resume action in the Flight "A" back draw on Saturday.
In Flight "B" doubles, Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) teamed up to breeze into the semifinals. Roser and Zaretsky faced Hartford's Morgan White and Jairus Baker, cruising to the 6-0 win. In the second round, Roser and Zaretsky drew Parker Goldstein and Arnaud Valentin, picking up the 6-3 victory to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Also competing in the Flight "B" doubles main drew were Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) but the pair narrowly fell to Anthony Savio and Derek Chapman, 7-5. Alper and Rozenstein made up for the loss in the Flight "B" back draw, cruising past Harrison Max and Luis Montes, 6-0, to advance in the back draw.
With doubles play completed for the day, the Bobcats moved on to singles with Alper reaching the quarterfinals of Flight "A." In the first round, Alper battled in a three-set match with Jeffrey Rodgers, coming away with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory. Alper then faced Marist's Timo Tanzer in the second round, winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Ezaka faced Max Darrington in the first round of his Flight "A" match, with Ezaka picking up the 6-4, 6-3 victory in the main draw. Moving on to the second round, Ezaka faced Yale's Photos Photiades, and Ezaka fell in three-set heartbreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10. Despite the loss, Ezaka will compete in the Flight "A" back draw tomorrow in the second day of the Connecticut State Championships.
Zaretsky continued his fine start to his collegiate career on the afternoon. After his two doubles victories, the standout freshman eased into the second round with a 6-1, 5-0 ret. victory over Hartford's William Drumwright. In the second round, Zaretsky nearly forced a third set with Yale's Jason Brown but fell, 6-3, 7-6 (4) and will join Ezaka in the Flight "A" back draw on Saturday.
Kuwert also advanced to the second round for the Bobcats by default against UConn's Jacob Spreyer but his day came to an end after his second round match was retired against Jan Dernic, 2-3.
Rozenstein and Roser both fell in the first round of the Flight "A" singles main draw, but saw success in the back draw on Friday. Rozenstein fell in a tight, two-set match against Hartford's Savio but then came back to win in the back draw, 6-1, 6-4 over UConn's Christopher Toner. Also in the main draw, Roser fell to Harvard's Christopher Morrow in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 but advanced to the next round of the back draw with a victory over Fairfield's Appel, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
In the Flight "B" main draw, the Bobcats saw a lot of success with Haraguchi and van Biezen each reaching the quarterfinals. Opening up the round, van Biezen took on Sacred Heart's Anthony Santino, breezing into the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The next round saw similar results for van Biezen as he advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UConn's Jonathon Edwards.
Haraguchi was just as successful as he opened up the first round against Fairfield's Gabriel Parnich with a 6-2, 6-1 victory before picking up another crucial victory in the second round over Matthew Suprenant, 6-2, 6-1.
The Bobcats' co-captain Ben Teicher (Kendall Park, New Jersey) also took the court in Flight "B" for the Bobcats as he fell in the first round to UConn's Hank Hill, 6-1, 6-2, before heading to the back draw where he was narrowly defeated by Hartford's Montes, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 A.M. with the doubles semifinals to take place as well as the quarterfinal and semifinal singles matches scheduled for later in the day.
