LITTLESTOWN, Pennyslvania – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team finished in fourth place out of eight teams competing at the Wagner Seahawk Invitational at Quail Valley Golf Course in Littlestown, Pennsylvania.
Albany led the tournament after the first day with a 325 (+37) followed by Wagner and Saint Francis in a tie for second place at 327 (+39). Quinnipiac finished seven strokes off the leader at 332 (+44) for fourth place, ahead of Delaware State, Hofstra, Niagara and St. Francis (N.Y.).
Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) continued her solid play of late as she headed into the clubhouse after the first round tied for sixth place with teammate Nicole Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island). Lambrou and Scola both shot 82 (+10), which put them eight strokes off of Saint Francis' Taylar Jaramillo's 74 (+2) for first place.
"It was a brisk, very windy day today. It's obviously very early in the season so the course isn't in the best shape it could be so it was a difficult challenge," head coach John O'Connor said. "Taylor Lambrou really came through today with an 82 today. I'm really pleased with her progress. Nicole Scola shot an 82 as well."
Lambrou's 82 is her third best score of the season after a 77 at the Quinnipiac tri-match on Mar. 13 and an 81 on the second day of the Quinnipiac Classic on Oct. 22. Lambrou entered the season with an 88.59 average but has shot 82.5 over her last seven rounds. For Scola, she finished second in the 46-player field in Par 5 Scoring, averaging a 5.00. She and leader Jaramillo were the only two golfers to shoot even or better on the courses' Par 5 holes. Scola was also one of eight players in the tournament shoot par on 10 or more holes for the first round.
In addition to Scola and Lambrou, freshman Estefania Morales (Caracas, Venezuala) and sophomore Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) both tied for 14th place. The duo were two strokes behind Lambrou and Scola with an 84 (+12) each. Morales was third in the field in Par 4 Scoring at 4.30 (+3), while Lambrou and Ribbins both shot a 4.50 clip.
"Everyone is looking to improve tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to a better day, hopefully with some better weather," O'Connor said.
Quinnipiac resumes play at the Wagner Seahawk Invitational on Monday, Apr. 6 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
