
QU Acrobatics & Tumbling Opens Season With Second Place Finish In Tri-Meet Against Baylor And Concordia

WACO, Texas – The Quinnipiac University acrobatics & tumbling team finished 8.815 points behind first-place Baylor in their season opener on Saturday evening at the Ferrell Center. In front of a Baylor Bears' record crowd of 1,453, the Bobcats took second-place with a final score of 253.59 to begin the season at 1-1. The Bears finished with a winning score of 262.405 to start the season at 2-0 on the year. Concordia University Wisconsin began their first season in the National Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) with a third-place score of 212.34.
Winning the first three events before the break, Baylor quickly took the lead. The Bears won the compulsory, acro, and pyramid events to score 96.950 points in the first half. Quinnipiac beat out Concordia in two of the first three events and trailed the Bears by just 2.9 points at halftime, scoring a total of 94.060 through three events. In the acro event, the Bobcats scored 29.11 points out of a possible 29.91. In the 5-Element acro heat, freshman Abby Ziser (Pompton Plains, New Jersey), sophomore Allee Tallman (Farmington, New York), freshman Grace Manthey (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman Jenna Adams (Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey) combined to score 9.85 points.
Out of halftime, the Bobcats looked to make their mark, as they won their only event of the afternoon. Quinnipiac cut the deficit in half to 1.65 points after winning the toss event with a score of 28.30 points. QU took both the second and third heat with scores of 9.20 and 9.85. Sophomore Kelsey Rule (Kendall Park, New Jersey), senior Christine Rochester (Waterford, Connecticut), junior Kayla McCormack (Hanson, Massachusetts), sophomore Noelle Brasier (Simi Valley, California) and junior Brittney Kusmierski (Omaha, Nebraska) combined to win heat three.
Quinnipiac lost ground in the tumbling event, winning only one heat while the Bears took five. The Bobcats scored a total of 48.75 through six different heats in the tumbling event but Baylor came away with 54.375 points. Junior Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Massachusetts) captured the open heat with a score of 8.90.
Quinnipiac finished out the day posting a score of 48.75 out of a possible 56.8 in the team routine. Baylor scored 54.375 points while the Concordia Falcons put up a score of 39. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-1 all-time against Quinnipiac. The Bobcats lone win came last season in Hamden, the only time QU hosted Baylor. Quinnipiac moves to 1-0 against the Concordia Falcons.
Quinnipiac will return to the mats for their home opener on Sunday, March 1 when they host the University of Oregon at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. at 12 p.m.
