
QU Men's Tennis Opens Up Regular Season Play with Two Matches This Weekend

WEEKEND DUAL
After the Quinnipiac Invitational was cancelled this past weekend, the Quinnipiac men's tennis had some time off before competing in the first two dual matches of the season this weekend where they will host the UConn Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 P.M. before traveling to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to face the Rider Broncs at 1 P.M.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Quinnipiac and UConn are very familiar with each other this season, facing off numerous times in the past two tournaments they have each competed in to start the season. Saturday marks the first dual match of the season for the Huskies, who finished last season with a 2-18 record. UConn won their first two matches of the season before losing 18 straight matches. Last season, the Bobcats swept the Huskies 7-0 to pick up the win.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
The Broncs are 0-5 heading into this weekend against the Bobcats, and have won just five games through the first five matches. No. 6 singles player Ryan Ciaccio has won a team-high three matches in singles, going 3-2 to have the only winning singles record. Ciaccio added another win in doubles to go 4-3 overall in dual matches. Diego Delgado is second on the team with three wins, going 2-3 in singles play (2-2 at No. 2) and is 1-4 in doubles play with Chris Popso. Individually, Rider players have combined to go 8-40 through five dual matches.
UCONN RECAP
The Bobcats had a dominating weekend at the UConn Invitational from Sept. 23-25, winning a total of four flight championships with three coming in singles play and one in doubles. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) defeated teammate Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) in the Flight "A" North singles championship, Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) won the Flight "B" West singles championship, Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won the Flight "A" South Consolation singles championship, and van Biezen and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) won the Flight "A" doubles championship. In total, the Bobcats went 23-7 individually during the tournament.
FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A VAN BIEZEN
After wrapping up play at the UConn Invitational, van Biezen finished the tournament with eight victories, going 8-0 on his way to the Flight "B" West singles championship. He is now 15-6 this season through his first 21 individual matches. In singles, van Biezen's nine wins are just four shy of his single-season career-high of 13 set during his freshman season.
RING AROUND THE ROSER
One of the Bobcats captains, Roser has had an incredible start to his senior season, posting a 14-5 record heading into the first dual match. Among his 14 wins, Roser has won 10 doubles matches to tie his career-high set during his freshman and junior seasons. He is also at 88 career wins, just 12 away from becoming the sixth men's tennis player in the program's Division I history to win 100 matches.
FRANKENSTEIN
Rozenstein picked up the Flight "A" North singles title at the UConn Invitational by defeating his own teammate, Alper, in the final match. Rozenstein is tied with van Biezen for the best record on the team at 15-6, posting a 9-2 record in singles and 6-4 mark in doubles play. The Bobcats' sophomore has won at a torrid pace since coming to Hamden, posting a 49-24 mark in under a season and a half.
THE KEI TO VICTORY
Ezaka returned to his winning form at the UConn Invitational as he tore up the Flight "A" South consolation singles bracket to win his first flight championship of the season. Ezaka picked up three wins on the weekend to give him six for the season and 76 in his career.
KYLE XY
Alper has been another consistent stay at the top of the stat chart for the Bobcats as he is already at 14 wins, going 14-6 after a six win weekend at the UConn Invitational. Alper has already surpassed his doubles win total from his freshman season, winning six doubles matches through three tournaments this season.
AFTER THE WEEKEND
After this weekend's pair of dual matches, the Bobcats will return to the courts on Friday, Oct. 16 in West Hartford, Connecticut against the Hartford Hawks at 4 P.M. before returning home for their second MAAC match of the season against the Saint Peter's Peacocks at 12 P.M. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
