Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team won their second consecutive game on Friday afternoon in front of a huge crowd at the QU Soccer Field. The Bobcats defeated the Yale Bulldogs in overtime 1-0. Senior midfielder Raphael Carvalho (Danbury, Conn.) scored the game winner down a man with a minute and a half remaining in the first overtime.
Carvalho's goal was the Bobcats lone shot of extra time after countering an impressive Yale attack. Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) recorded his second assist in three games with the pass to find Carvalho with room inside the box. The midfielder was able to get enough leg under the ball to strike it just over the opposing goalkeeper's outstretched hands. The golden goal was the first score of Carvalho's career as a Bobcat. A Quinnipiac substitute was waiting on the sideline to enter the game and come in for Carvalho when he scored.
Quinnipiac had several scoring opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs five to two. The Bobcats continued to play their signature style of soccer, moving the ball across the field and spreading out the touches. Quinnipiac's attack looked strong while they used their back line of defense including goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) to push the ball forward. After two saves a piece between each goalkeeper, the first half ended without a score.
The second half was a different story as Yale mostly dominated the attack. The Bulldogs outshot Quinnipiac seven to three in the second frame. Angoitia was all over the field for the Bobcats, stopping anything that came near him. With a free ball rolling to the corner flag, Angoitia sprinted out of the box to possess the ball an instant before a Bulldog was able to get a touch.
With five minutes remaining in regulation, the Bobcat goalkeeper made a diving save after a strong chance from Yale. A minute later, junior Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) was sent off the field with a red card. Jobe received the card for unintentionally committing a high kick to the stomach of a Bulldog defender. Down a man with minutes left, Angoitia recorded the biggest stop of the night. Teddy Mauze found the ball inside the box for Yale and had a one on one opportunity with the keeper, but Angoitia made another diving save.
Carvalho possibly had the best chance at a Bobcat goal in regulation, but struck the ball off the crossbar in the 68th minute. His goal in overtime secured the second all-time victory against the cross-town rival Yale Bulldogs. In their last meeting the Bobcats secured their first win in the matchup, winning 1-0 at the Reese Stadium in New Haven. Former Quinnipiac standout and All-MAAC First Teamer Simon Hinde, scored the game winner in just the sixth minute of the match. Current Bobcats, James Doig and Erik Panzer were each credited with the assist.
Angoitia recorded his 19th career shutout and third in four games with the victory. He is now three back of tying the career shutout record of 22 held by former standout, Frederick Hall. Angoitia also recorded his 26th career win, moving him into a tie with Hall's top mark.
Up next, Quinnipiac will wrap up their home stand with the start of conference play against Niagara at the QU Soccer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 30that 2 p.m.
