CROMWELL, Conn. - Quinnipiac women's golf freshman Krissy Unger (New York, N.Y.) was tied for the lead after the first round of the Quinnipiac Classic at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. The Bobcats finished the day in second place.
A pair of birdies on the front nine carried Unger for the day. The first-year Bobcat finished at +3 for the front nine, and +6 for the back nine for a +9, 79. Unger, Wagner's Kathryn Jimerson and Merrimack's Alli Reed were the only three golfers out of the 36-player field to break 80 for the day.
Quinnipiac placed three players in the top 10 as freshman Jenn Whaley (Avon, Conn.) finished tied for fifth with a +11, 81 while Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Alberta) finished tied for eighth with a +12, 82. Hannah Russell (Monson, Mass.) finished tied for 19th at +20 while Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, N.Y.) was tied for 20th.
Quinnipiac (332) heads into the second day of competition trailing Merrimack (330) for the lead by two strokes. Fairfield drops into third place at 341, followed by Delaware State (345), Wagner (348) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (373).
Quinnipiac also raised money for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation to raise money for Breast Cancer research. Quinnipiac student-athletes, coaches and fans all wore pink in support of the foundation's efforts.
The second-day of the Quinnipiac Classic commences on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford, Conn.
