LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – For the first time since 2016, the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey program is champions of the ECAC.
The Bobcats scored the first three goals of the title game and added a couple empty netters as insurance, giving the No. 3 seed a 5-1 victory over rivals and No. 1 seed Yale in the Championship Game.
Ella Johnson opened the scoring in the first period on a breakaway and later added an empty-net goal for her first collegiate multi-goal performance.
Avery Bairos, a postseason standout, doubled the lead midway through the second period with her fourth goal of the season and second of the playoffs.
Zoe Uens continued the Bobcats' offensive push just 3:45 into the third period, scoring her fourth power-play goal of the season to extend the lead.
Yale responded later in the third with its lone goal of the night before Quinnipiac added two more. Johnson and Emerson Jarvis scored empty-net goals 23 seconds apart to break the game wide open.
The highlight of the night came from tournament MVP Felicia Frank, who stopped 31 shots in the championship game and finished the weekend with 61 saves while allowing just two goals.
The ECAC Hockey Women's All-Tournament Team also featured forward Avery Bairos and defenders Makayla Watson and Zoe Uens.
With the victory, Quinnipiac earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Women's Hockey Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show takes place on Sunday, March 8, at 11:30 a.m and will air on ESPNU.
