Quinnipiac Defeats UConn in Midweek Battle

Storrs, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats took down the UConn Huskies, 8-3, in the midweek contest in Storrs. The win marks QU's first win over the Huskies since March 22nd, 2006.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Alex Irizarry got the Bobcats on the board first in the third inning as he launched a three-run home run over the right-center field wall.
UConn got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth inning on an RBI single to left field from Nater Wachter.
The game remained 3-1 until the seventh inning, when the Bobcats added on to their lead. Christian Smith launched his second home run of the season to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning, Cole Constable grounded out, but Jack Balcer came in to score to make it a 5-1 lead for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac tacked on some more in the eighth, scoring three runs in the inning. Christian Smith drove in two runs on a two-run double to the left-center field gap. Later in the eighth, Kyle Garbowski drove in Smith with a double of his own, making it an 8-1 game.
UConn struck with a two-run homer in their half of the eighth inning, but that was all they would get as Quinnipiac closed out a hard-fought win over the Huskies.

NEWS AND NOTES
- Six different Bobcats recorded hits in the win over UConn. Three of those Bobcats recorded multiple hits in the win.
- Christian Smith had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Smith hit his second home run of the season with his seventh-inning blast.
- After missing eight games, Smith has recorded a hit in five of the last six games he has appeared in.
- Kyle Garbowski picked up three hits in four at-bats, raising his batting average to .309 on the year.
- Jack Balcer racked up two hits in the win as his batting average rose to .308, which ranks third on the team.
- Alex Irizarry hit his second home run of the season with his three-run homer. Irizarry now leads the team in RBIs (17) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (2).
- Caden Williamson picked up another hit, extending his hit streak to nine games and his on-base streak to twelve games.
- Joseph Hiller was solid in his first start this season, going 4.0 innings, allowing just one earned run, and striking out five.
- Josh Lajoie struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings pitched. Lajoie lowered his season ERA to 5.79.
- J.c. Franconere pitched another scoreless inning in relief, his seventh appearance, allowing zero runs. Franconere hasn't allowed an earned run in his last four appearances.
- Matt Alduino shut the door in the ninth, lowering his ERA to 2.77 on the year.

- The Bobcats will get back into MAAC play as they will head to Jersey City to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks in a three-game set (March 27-29).
