FARMINGDALE, NY – Former Quinnipiac student-athlete Chris Mascali '05 delivered a powerful message to the U.S. Ryder Cup team on Monday morning at Bethpage Black Golf Course.
Mascali – a golf student-athlete during his time at Quinnipiac – spoke to the 12 golfers representing the United States about his father, Joe Mascali, a New York City firefighter who tragically passed away on Sept. 11, 2001.
Chris, a current FDNY lieutenant, spoke to the US squad at the request of team captain Keegan Bradley.
Chris and the Mascali family gave Quinnipiac the Heroes Hat, the prized trophy in one of the most spirited rivalries in college hockey.
Not long after 9/11, Quinnipiac established the Heroes Hat men's ice hockey game to honor Joe Mascali and those lost in the terror attacks. The wonderful sentiment began with a rivalry game against UConn. These days, QU and Yale play for the privileged trophy, a replica of Mascali's helmet.
