Smith Homers Twice, Bobcats Fall to Mount

EMMITSBURG, M.D. – The Bobcats and Mountaineers traded runs for much of the series opener, but Mount St. Mary's scored the final three runs to take the opening game of the series by a final score of 11-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CJ Willis got the Bobcats on the board in the opening inning as he launched his 10th home run of the season. Mount St. Mary's responded in their half of the inning as they knotted the game up at one on an RBI double.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the second inning as they scored two runs to make it a 3-1 game.
Quinnipiac made it a one-run game in the third inning as Johnny Knox singled home Sean McCulloch with QU's second run of the game.
In the fourth inning, Sebastian Mueller hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season to even the game up at three. Mount St. Mary's responded in their half of the fourth inning with two runs to retake the lead.
Quinnipiac got back on the board in the sixth inning as CJ Willis doubled home Johnny Knox to make it a one-run game. With one out in the inning, Christian Smith launched a three-run home run to right field to give Quinnipiac the 7-5 lead.
In the seventh inning, the Mountaineers took the lead back as they plated three runs in the inning and led 8-7 heading into the 8th inning.
Christian Smith knotted the game up at eight with his second home run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. The Mount responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 11-8 lead. The Mountaineers retired the Bobcats in order in the top of the ninth to take the opening game of the series.

- Five different Bobcats recorded at least one hit in the loss, and four Bobcats recorded multiple hits.
- Christian Smith led the offense with four RBIs as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Smith picked up his 11th and 12th home runs of the season, good for second on the team.
- CJ Willis picked up two hits in the effort and drove in two runs.
- Willis now has 50 RBIs on the season as he his batting .343.
- Sebastian Mueller and Johnny Knox both went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the series opener.
- Sebastian Mueller picked up a hit in each game to extend his hit streak to 12.
