Quinnipiac Earns Series Sweep Over Iona

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated the Iona Gaels in the final game of the series, 12-3, to earn the sweep and start conference play 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Quinnipiac got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the opening inning. Sebastian Mueller started the party with an RBI single to left center, scoring Sean McCulloch with the game's first run. Christian Smith followed suit, bringing home Kyle Garbowski with an RBI single of his own. With one out in the inning, CJ Willis singled to right field to bring home two more runs as the Bobcats took a 4-0 lead.
After Iona was held off the board in the second inning, Quinnipiac blew the game open, scoring six runs in the frame. Sean McCulloch drove home Cole Constable on a single to make it a five-run lead. With the bases loaded, Christian Smith drew a walk to force another run in. James Marino scored Kyle Garbowski with a sacrifice fly to give the Bobcats a seven-run lead. With two outs in the inning, CJ Willis stepped up with two runners on and sent one over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season.
The Bobcats added an eleventh run in the sixth inning as Kyle Garbowski singled through the right side, bringing home Gabe Wright.
Iona would score three runs in the seventh inning to avoid the mercy rule, making it a 11-3 lead for Quinnipiac. CJ Willis made it 12-3 in the bottom half of the seventh as he doubled into the gap to score James Marino.
