HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team returns to action with its only set of back-to-back games of the 2018 season as the Bobcats travel to defending national champion No. 2 UConn on Saturday before returning to the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m. to face the Brown Bears.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats had a light week last week with just one game, falling in a tightly contested matchup with then-No. 19 Maine Black Bears, 3-2. Makayla Adams and Elisa van Winkel each scored goals to answer Maine tallies while goalkeeper Hannah Teicher tied her career-high once again with six saves.
Scouting UConn
UConn comes into the weekend a perfect 6-0 and have outscored opponents 25-6 through the first six games, including four nationally-ranked opponents. Last time out, the Huskies took down the No. 10 team in the nation, Syracuse, 3-0. Cecile Pieper leads the team with five goals and 13 points on the season while Antonia Tiedtke has six helpers. The Huskies rank third in the nation averaging 4.17 goals per game and are second with a 3.17 scoring margin. Svea Boker is the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week while Cecile Pieper is the reigning BIG EAST and NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week.
Scouting Brown
The Bears come into the weekend with a 1-3 record on the season with their lone win coming against Bryant in the season opener. Gina Openshaw leads the team with three goals on the season while freshman Danielle van Rootselaar and senior Ellie Seid each have four points. Goalkeeper Katie Hammaker has a 2.41 GAA and .697 save percentage.
Like a Rock
Goalkeeper Hannah Teicher has been solid between the posts for the Bobcats so far this season, posting a 2.02 GAA and .704 save percentage in four starts. She has a total of 19 saves, including season-highs of six twice this season. Last time out, Teicher recorded six saves as the Bobcats narrowly fell to the No. 19 Black Bears at home.
Amazing Adams
One of the Bobcats' top freshman, Makayla Adams has had a great start to her collegiate career with two goals. She most recently put home a goal against No. 19 Maine with a minute to go before halftime. She is tied for the team-lead with four points.
Wink of an Eye
Another Quinnipiac freshman, Elisa van Winkel, has also stood out for Quinnipiac with excellent midfield play. She also tallied her second goal of the season against No. 19 Maine to give her four points on the season. She has been one of the Bobcats more aggressive midfielders with seven shots on goal.
First Helpers
Elisa Ruiz Martinez and Brooke Whipkey each tallied their first assists of the season, with Whipkey's going down as the first of her career. Ruiz Martinez tallied her first helper of the year after seven points last season.
Lending a Helping Hand
Ines Ruiz Martinez continues to play a solid role in the midfield as she notched her second defensive save of the season. Last year, Ruiz Martinez tallied a career-best four defensive saves.
Rankings
Quinnipiac is facing its third nationally ranked opponent through the first six games of the season. The challenging schedule provides the most ranked teams Quinnipiac has faced int that span since 2015.
A Homecoming of Sorts
Assistant coach Nina Klein returns to her alma mater for Saturday's game at UConn where she won three national championships, including 2017. A standout goalkeeper for the Huskies, Klein registered program records with 80 wins and 42 shutouts.
