HAMDEN, Connecticut – Three-time defending NIRA National Champion Quinnipiac Rugby fell in the 2018 season opener to Harvard, 32-19. The Bobcats struck for three tries, but could not hold off a strong offensive effort from the Crimson.

- (Harvard 5, Quinnipiac 0): Sofia Fella scored the opening try with 35 minutes remaining in the first half and gave Harvard the early 5-0 lead.
- (Harvard 5, Quinnipiac 7): Quinnipiac answered when Mikah Maples (Moweaqua, Illinois) broke free and scored the first try of 2018 for the Bobcats. McKenna Haz (Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia) completed the conversion to give the Bobcats the 7-5 lead and also had the assist on the try.
- (Harvard 10, Quinnipiac 7): Harvard quickly answered to take the 10-7 lead after Cassidy Bargell found the try zone and erased the Bobcats early lead.
- (Harvard 10, Quinnipiac 12): Clara Lemal-Brown (Wooster, Ohio) broke free up the left side of the field and found the try zone with just over 17 minutes to play in the opening half to give Quinnipiac the 12-10 lead.
- (Harvard 15, Quinnipiac 12): Sarah Lipson scored a try with 6 minutes to play in the opening half to continue the back-and-forth first half. The try gave Harvard a 15-12 lead.
- (Harvard 20, Quinnipiac 12): Harvard converted late in the opening half as Milan Roberts scored a try to give the Crimson a 20-12 lead.
- (Harvard 27, Quinnipiac 12): Ariana Romero struck for the try as she broke free up the left side and scored to give Harvard the 13 point lead. Jenny Kronish followed it up with her first successful conversion of 2018 to push the Crimson lead to 15.
- (Harvard 27, Quinnipiac 19): Emily Roskopf (Dublin, California) made numerous moves and turned on the jets, moving the ball down the feel until tossing to Margot Vella (Leppington, Australia), who scored her first-career try with the Bobcats. Haz tallied another conversion to cut the Crimson lead to 8, 27-19 with 18 minutes to play.
- (Harvard 32, Quinnipiac 19): Grace Chao cemented the victory for the Crimson with a quick try in the final two minutes of the game.
NOTES
- Haz converted on two tries on the afternoon in her first collegiate match.
- Roskopf had an assist on the Vella try that pulled the Bobcats within striking distance.
- Vella and Lemal-Brown each struck for their first tries in the blue and gold during the opening game of 2018.
- Quinnipiac will return to action when they host Dartmouth next Saturday at 12 PM in a rematch of the 2017 NIRA National Championship.
