AUBURN, Ala. — Senior Jessica Lee shaved some time off of one of her old Quinnipiac school records (100-meter hurdles) and then put her name on a new one (100-meter dash), while junior Marlo Wehrer set a new school mark in the 400-meter hurdles to highlight the performance of the Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team at Auburn University's Tiger Track Classic on Saturday.
Lee ran a blistering 13.27 in the 100-meter hurdles, knocking a quarter of a second off her old school record of 13.52, which she set last week at the Colonial Relays in her first race of the season. Her time placed her fifth out of 57 competitors in Auburn, but second among collegiate competitors, behind only Cortney Jones of Florida State (13.03). The other hurdlers in front of her were Christine Manning of adidas, Isabelle Pedersen of Norway, and Amber Hughes, who was competing unattached.
In addition to competing in the hurdles, Lee also ran the 100-meter dash and set a new school record with an 11.72. The time was almost a second faster than her previous best in the event, a 12.64 that she ran as a freshman, and broke the old school record of 11.87, set by Shameal Samuels in 2015. She placed sixth overall at Auburn out of 58 runners to give her two top-10 finishes.
Lee also wasn't theMarlo Wehrerr to set a school record at the Tiger Track Classic, as junior Marlo Wehrer came in fifth out of 34 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.68. That time surpassed her own personal best of 1:01.34 set last year at the MAAC Championships, and surpassed the school record set by Christian Barbaro (1:01.10) in the same race.
In the throwing events, Mackenzie Merkel had a 40.99 meters in the discus to shatter her previous personal best of 38.63 by over two meters, while breaking the 40-meter plateau for the first time. She stands in second place in Quinnipiac history in the discus, behind only Mikah Maples (43.09 meters).
Sophomore Kaitlin Bakas finished fifth in the 5000 with a 17:36.71, which moves her into the top 10 in Quinnipiac history (10th) in that event. Junior Maria Ricalton came in fifth out of 30 competitors in the 3000 with a 10:16.10, while junior Carly Timpson was fourth out of 20 in the high jump (1.70 meters).
In addition to the Tiger Track Classic, the Bobcats also had numerous competitors at the Rider Track Invitational this weekend. Highlighting the team's performance there was a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters from Ahmetra Davies (2:20.86), just ahead of Brooke Hagen in ninth (2:23.72), and a sixth-place finish in the 100 meters from Meredith Ramsey (13.54).
