QU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Old Dominion, Wins Game 1, 5-2

NORFOLK, Virginia - The Quinnipiac baseball team split the doubleheader with Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats defeated the Monarchs in Game 1, 5-2, but fell in the second contest. Brian Moskey and Ben Gibson led Quinnipiac offensively. Brandon Shileikis picked up his second win of the year and Mike Davis collected his second save in as many days. The Bobcats are now 6-6 for the season and the Monarchs are 6-9.

GAME 1 NOTES

Graduate student Brandon Shileikis got the start on the hill for the Bobcats in first game. He threw seven innings in his second victory of the season, collecting a three strikeouts. He allowed only a pair of runs on six hits.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fifth, junior Brian Moskey launched a solo shot to begin the inning, tying the game at one. The home run was Moskey's second of the year. He leads the Bobcats with 13 RBI.
Later in the inning, with two outs, senior Ben Gibson would deposit one over the left-center field fence and give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead. Gibson leads the team with three home runs for the season.
The Monarchs would put one on the board in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 2.
Sophomore Andre Marrero would lead off the top of the next inning with a single.
After Marrero would advance because of a balk, freshman Colton Bender would send him to third with a single.
Junior Evan Vulgamore would drive home Marrero from third, his 11th RBI of 2018.
Junior Liam Scafariello brought in Bender with a one-out single to bring the Bobcats' lead to 4-2. Scafariello has 12 runs batted in on the year.
Quinnipiac would add an insurance run in the eighth when Brian Moskey swiped third base and was able to score on a throwing error.
Freshman Arthur Correira came in for the eight inning, and pitched well. He did not allow a run and struck out the final batter he faced.
Colton Bender picked off a runner at first from behind the plate for the second out of the inning to alleviate some of the pressure from Correira.
Senior Mike Davis recorded his second save in as many days. He allowed only one hit and fanned one batter.
Colton Bender, Andre Marrero, and Brian Moskey each had a pair of hits.

GAME 2 NOTES

Freshmen Dylan Lutz and Colton Bender each had a pair of hits.
Junior Tyler Poulin got the ball for the second game of the twin bill. He allowed seven runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings work on six hits.
Seniors Mike DellaMedaglia and Chris Enns combined with Poulin to finish the sixth inning. Enns would also pitch the seventh inning.
Sophomore Nick Paasch worked the eighth inning, allowing a pair of base runners but no runs.

UPCOMING GAMES
The Bobcats will play in their first set of weekday games when they take on the College of Charleston on Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14. Both games are set to start at 6:00 p.m.
