HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team celebrated its Senior Day with a 6-1 win over previously unbeaten MAAC rival Siena on Sunday afternoon at the QU Tennis Courts.
The win was the Bobcats' third in a row and improved their record to 8-7 (4-0 MAAC), while Siena suffered its first loss of the season, moving its record to 15-1 (4-1 MAAC), leaving Quinnipiac and Fairfield as the only undefeated teams in conference play.
The team celebrated the careers of seniors Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida), Sydney Young (Austin, Texas), Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) in a ceremony before the contest against Siena.
All Quinnipiac players who played in the contest won at least one match with Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Rencheli both winning two.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match, where Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) and Lu defeated Juliana Goehner and Anessa Leyva, 6-2. Horton and Young then took the court in the No. 1 doubles match, looking to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats. However, Mitsuki Fukamachi and Ali Garrity defeated the Quinnipiac duo, 6-2. This gave Oliphant and Rencheli the opportunity to secure the doubles point against Natalie Weaver and Ivana Boberic in the No. 2 doubles match. The senior duo came through for Quinnipiac, securing the point with a 6-2 win. The win was the duo's sixth straight win, which is the highest streak of the season for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 win into singles play, where Young defeated Weaver in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1 in the No. 4 match. The win was Young's 35th of the season, which is tops on the team. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead after Horton swept Fukamachi in the No. 3 match, 6-2 and 6-3. Quinnipiac secured the win after Lu defeated Boberic in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match.
In the No. 1 singles match, Garrity took Rencheli to three sets before Rencheli would put her away. Rencheli took the first set 6-2 but dropped the second, 5-7. However, Rencheli bounced back and defeated Garitty convincingly, 6-0. The Bobcats took a 6-0 lead after Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) defeated Leyva in three sets. Lohaphaisan dropped the first set 6-7 (5), but took the final two sets 6-1 and 10-7. The day concluded with the No. 5 match where Rodriguez narrowly fell to Rina Sakai in three heavily contested sets. Rodriguez took the first set 6-4 but dropped the final two, 6-4 and 10-6.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12, when the Bobcats host Binghamton at 3 p.m. at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
