Kei Ezaka Jumps to Second Place on All-Time Wins List
NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac men's tennis team was able to win its second straight game after cruising past former NEC rival Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the North haven health & Racquet Club.
With the win the Bobcats improve to 7-4 (3-0 MAAC), while Fairleigh Dickinson falls to 3-8 on the season.
Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey), Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey), Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) all earned two victories on the day. Ezaka's two wins gives him 132 victories in his career, moving him into second place on the program's all-time list.
The Bobcats got off to an electrifying start and never took their foot off the gas, as Quinnipiac took the first six points of the match to secure the victory.
The day began in the No. 2 doubles match, where Axel Stern (Tustin, California) and Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) defeated Pedro Carvalho and Diogo Gamel, 6-0. The win for Stern and Yannone was their 10th of the season, which is tops on the team in doubles play. The Bobcats' duo of Ezaka and Alper secured the doubles point by defeating Mika Nobuzawa and Gonzalo Quintana, 6-1, in the No. 3 doubles match. Zaretsky and Rozenstein rolled to a 6-3 win over Danilo Vukotic and Adam Chan to secure the Doubles sweep.
The Bobcats continued to roll in singles play, taking five straight matches. Ezaka got the singles roll started by defeating Quintana in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4. The win was Ezaka's 132nd of his career which is second all-time in program history. Ezaka is now five wins away from tying John Hughes' program-record 137 wins.
Rozenstein kept the winning streak alive by defeating Vukotic in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3. Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) took down Gamel in straight sets in the No. 5 match, 7-5 and 7-6 (5). Zaretsky followed with a win of his own over Carvalho in three sets, 6-3, 1-6 and 7-5. Alper gave Quinnipiac a 6-0 lead after defeating Salomon Koster in three sets, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4.
The Bobcats closed the day with a loss in the No. 4 singles match, as Stern fell to Chan in three sets. Chan just edged out Stern in the first set, 7-5, but Stern battled back to take the second set 4-6. However, he just dropped the third set, 6-4.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, March 25, when Quinnipiac takes on Wesleyan at 6 p.m. at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
