MOUNT PLEASANT, Michigan – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Central Michigan, 2-1 in overtime, in a non-conference match-up in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 0-3 on the season while CMU picks up its first victory of the season to improve to 1-2.
Quinnipiac scored late in the first half to jump out to a 1-0 lead before Central Michigan countered six minutes later to tie the game. It stayed that way through the second half before CMU's Alex Gonda scored the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in overtime. Quinnipiac held the advantage for most of the game, including shots (20-13), shots-on-goal (13-8) and penalty corners (15-7).
Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) put Quinnipiac out in front with her second goal in as many games, which also stands as the 18th of her career. Reilly scored when a ball became loose to the left of CMU Abigail Ebersole. Reilly picked up the loose ball and threw the ball on the Chippewa's goal, beating Ebersole to the near post.
Moments later, Central Michigan's Jasmine Banks scored the game at 1-1 off of a corner set. The tie stood until late in the second half when Reilly appeared to score her second goal of the game. The Bobcats got the ball deep in the circle before Reilly settled the bouncing ball and slapped it past CMU's Ebersole to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead. The ruling on the field was that the initial shot on goal was lifted and thus, waved off.
In overtime, Gonda took a pass from Maude Stalars off of a corner set and beat Quinnipiac goalkeeper Olivia Golini (York, Maine) to give the Chippewas the come-from-behind win in overtime.
The Bobcats return to action on Monday, Sept. 5 when they face Michigan State in Lansing, Michigan at 11 a.m.
