QU Men's Tennis Falls in Heartbreaking MAAC Championship Match to Monmouth, 4-3

WEST WINDSOR, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker in the 2016 MAAC Men's Tennis Championship Game as Monmouth came back to defeat Quinnipiac, 4-3.
The Bobcats were making their first ever MAAC Championship Game appearance as the loss snapped their six-match winning streak. The Bobcats complete their record breaking season with a program record 16 wins, going 16-8, while Monmouth improves to 12-9.
Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) led the Bobcats with two individual victories each.
Kuwert finished his career with 99 career victories between his two years at Old Dominion and two years at Quinnipiac. This season, Kuwert compiled new career-highs with 33 wins, 17 singles wins and 16 doubles wins.
Rozenstein tied the program record for singles wins in a single season with 24 as he went 24-9 in singles play 11-9 in doubles for 35 total wins.
It was a crazy match between the two teams as the Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Hawks chipped their way back. With the match tied 3-3, Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Christian Vieira battled into a third set tiebreaker. After the lengthy tiebreaker, Vieira pulled ahead to win 11-9 and clinched the MAAC title for Monmouth
Quinnipiac started off the match taking the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Rozenstein and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) paired up once again at No. 3 doubles to defeat Vieira and Alberto Giuffrida easily, 6-1. Monmouth even up the doubles point at No. 2 doubles as Vidit Vaghela and Ale Gomez teamed up to beat Roser and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California), 6-2. Kuwert and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) clinched the doubles point for the Bobcats at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 win over Przemyslaw Filipek.
The Bobcats took the first two singles match to claim a 3-0 lead. Kuwert was the first Bobcat done at No. 4 singles as he cruised past Gomez, 6-3, 6-4. Rozenstein finished shortly after Kuwert at No. 3 singles, picking up the 6-3, 6-4 win.
From there, Monmouth took the next four singles matches. Giuffrida defeated Haraguchi 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to make it 3-1 before Zaretsky went down at No. 2 singles to Filipek, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (4). Vaghela came back to defeat Ezaka in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 to even the score, 3-3. Roser and Vieira battled with all eyes on court five in the thrilling finish.
