FULL RESULTS
FAIRFAX, Virginia – Led by a pair of scintillating victories from Shameal Samuels (400m) and Jessica Lee (100m hurdles), the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team tied for fifth out of 24 teams at the George Mason Spring Invitational.
With snowflakes falling throughout and winds gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour, Quinnipiac battled all day long and came away with a very successful performance in the one-day meet.
Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) was tremendous in her first 400m appearance of the season as the senior clocked in at 55.11 seconds to best a field of 26 competitors. Samuels was brilliant in the freezing temperatures as she crossed the line well over one second faster than the runner-up who crossed the line in 56.31 seconds (1.20 seconds slower than Samuels).
Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) joined in on the fun, running a stunning program record time of 14.26 seconds in the 100m hurdles finals to take the individual victory as she bested a field of 22 hurdlers. Not only did Lee take the individual victory but she also claimed first in the preliminary stage as well, clocking in at 14.69 seconds to advance to the finals as the top finisher in the opening round.
Several more tremendous performances followed including a new personal-best for junior Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) who jumped 5.62m in the long jump to take a career-best second place finish out of 26 competitors. Pisciotta's previous personal-best (5.43m) was easily surpassed on the day's action.
Tremendously, Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) nearly qualified for the ECAC Championships in her first career hammer throw appearance, as the freshman tossed 49.82m (51.00m ECAC qualifying standard). Nevertheless, Timpson still became the first hammer throw competitor the Bobcats have ever fielded while her throw was also good enough for third place out of 23 competitors.
The Bobcats came up with a third place finish in the 4x400m relay as the team of Samuels, Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York), Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) and Marlo Wehrer (Pequannock, New Jersey) clocked in at 4:05.82 to take the result out of eight teams.
Ulrich later doubled up as the senior took a sixth place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 26.53 seconds while Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) also came through with a solid ninth place showing with a time of 26.75 seconds.
Wehrer also doubled up with a seventh place showing to earn some points for the Bobcats in the 400m hurdles as she timed in at 1:05.80. Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey) also placed in the same event as she clocked in at 1:06.23.
Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) placed seventh in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:47.08. Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) showed well with a 13th place finish and time of 18:33.62 in the sophomore's first career 5000m appearance.
Up next for the Bobcats is a long-awaited trip out to the West Coast as Quinnipiac will shake off the chilly weather for a chance to sun in the sunshine out in California at the Long Beach Invite. The Bobcats will take a limited crop of competitors out to the national spotlight as the majority of the team will be in action on Saturday, April 16 at the Minute Men Invitational (held at UMass Amherst).
