
QU Men's Tennis Remains Unbeaten in MAAC, Comes From Behind to Beat Monmouth, 4-3

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won the 100th match of his career Thursday afternoon as the Quinnipiac men's tennis team came from behind to defeat the Monmouth Hawks, 4-3, in a matchup of unbeaten teams in MAAC play.
Quinnipiac extends its winning streak to a season-high five matches, improving to 12-6 in 2015-16 and remaining perfect in MAAC play with a 4-0 record. Monmouth falls to 7-9 (4-1 MAAC) this season with their first loss in conference play.
Ezaka is the seventh player in program history, and second this season, to win 100 matches in a career as he joined Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) in accomplishing the feat. Ezaka was one of three Bobcats to win two matches in the win over Monmouth as he extended his personal winning streak to 10 straight matches with five straight singles wins and eight straight doubles wins. Ezaka also became the fifth player in program history, along with Roser, to record 50 wins in a career in both singles and doubles.
Roser also picked up two wins on the day for the Bobcats, including the game-winning match at No. 5 singles for his team-leading 36th win of the season. Roser's singles win was the 59th of his career, just two shy of tying John Hughes for second in Division I program history.
Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) made a little history of his own as he tied his career-high for wins in a season with 20 and recorded the 50th win of his career, the 28th player in Division I program history to reach the 50 win mark. Haraguchi won two matches on the day.
The Bobcats secured the doubles point to open up the match, taking two of the three matches from the Hawks. Ezaka and Roser teamed up to cruised past Richard Chen and Ale Gomez Estrada, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles, with the Bobcats pairing up the 100-career winners for the first time this season. Rozenstein and Haraguchi improved to 3-0 this season, all in conference play, with a 6-1 win against Christian Vieira and Alberto Giuffrida at No. 3 doubles.
Monmouth wrapped up doubles play with their only win, a 6-4 win for Przemyslaw Filipek and Vidit Vaghela over Kuwert and Zaretsky at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Monmouth took three of first four complete matches to claim a 3-2 lead. After Haraguchi handily defeated Richard Chen at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, Monmouth won the next three. At No. 3 singles, Gomez defeated Rozenstein in a tight match, 7-6 (6), 6-3 before Filipek knocked off Zaretsky at No. 2 singles with two tiebreaker victories, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). Vieira finished off the winning for the Hawks at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Kuwert.
With the Bobcats down by two matches, Ezaka evened up the score at 3-3 with a big win at No. 1 singles over Vaghela, 6-4, 7-6 (1). The match came down to Roser and Giuffrida at No. 5 singles with Roser pulling out the huge three-set win, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team will take on undefeated Marist (12-3, 4-0 MAAC) in a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Semifinals on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 1 PM at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
