
QU Baseball Snaps Six-Game Losing Streak with 5-4 Win at Dartmouth

HANOVER, New Hampshire – Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) tallied a game-high three hits as the Quinnipiac baseball team overcame a 3-1 first inning deficit to defeat the Dartmouth Big Green, 5-4, on Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park Wednesday afternoon.
Quinnipiac's win snaps a six-game losing streak as the Bobcats improve to 7-14 this season while Dartmouth falls to 5-14 with the loss in their home opener.
Batten went 3 for 4 to lead the Bobcats, with one double, one run scored and one stolen base. He also laid down a sacrifice bunt for the Bobcats. Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) played one of his best games of the season as he went 2 for 4 with a double, run scored, drove in a RBI and stole a base.
Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, New York), Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut), and Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) each singled, walked and scored a run in the win.
The Bobcats' bullpen combined to scatter five hits over six innings of work with one unearned run allowed, highlighted by Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) picking up his first save of the season. Hitt pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Quinnipiac got things started in the top of the first inning with one run. Batten singled to lead off the game before Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) sacrificed him into scoring position. Pescitelli and Iannotti drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. After a Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) strikeout, Batten came home to score on a wild pitch with two outs. After Gibson walk, the Bobcats stranded the bases loaded.
Dartmouth scored three runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Matt Feinstein doubled to lead off the game followed by a Sean Sullivan bunt single to put runners on the corners. Joe Purritano tripled to left centerfield, scoring both runners before coming home to score on Michael Ketchmark's RBI single.
Neither team scored a run until the top of the fourth inning when the Bobcats cut the Big Green lead to one run. Moskey led off with a double to centerfield and swiftly stole third base. Aron Fried (Ossining, N.Y.) drove home his first career RBI with a groundout to second base that scored Moskey.
The Bobcats took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs to make it 4-3. Pescitelli and Iannotti hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, with Pescitelli going first to third and Iannotti taking second on the throw. Burns walked to load the bases. With one out in the inning, Moskey laid a bunt down the third base line to score Pescitelli. John Bodenhmer (Maple Valley, Washington) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Iannotti.
Gibson gave the Bobcats an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Bobcats a two-run lead, 5-3. Burns walked with one out in the inning followed by a Gibson single. The Bobcats attempted a double steal, but Burns was thrown out at third base. With Gibson on second, Moskey reached on a throwing error by shortstop Justin Fowler that scored Gibson.
Dartmouth got one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning but couldn't finish off the comeback. The Big Green got runners on first and second with a walk to Steffen Torgerson and a Ketchmark single. With two outs in the inning, Dustin Shirley reached on an infield single and a throwing error by Burns allowed Torgerson to score. After Shirley stole second base and Ben Socher walked to load the bases, Nate Ostmo grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Quinnipiac baseball team continues its road trip when they travel to South Orange, New Jersey this weekend for a three-game series with the Seton Hall Pirates. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 PM before they return to action on Saturday at 1 PM and wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 PM.
