HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Florida – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team finished the first round of the 2016 Bearcat Spring Classic tied for 13th place. The Bobcats' freshman stand-out Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) led Quinnipiac with an 80 (+8) for a tie of 15th place.
Quinnipiac was fourth among the 17-team field in Par holes, as the Bobcats combined to shoot even on 46 holes. The Bobcats were also +9 on par 3 holes, good for a second in the field. The Bobcats' combined score of 331 (+43) led High Point's 335 (+47), Albany's 336 (+48) and Hofstra's 349 (+61). Akron led after the first round, with a 313 (+25) while host Cincinnati was second at 314 (+26).
Tobia parred 12 of the 18 holes at El Campeon Golf Course. The first-year Bobcat started on 10th tee and opened with back-to-back double bogeys. Tobia settled in and shot three straight pars, which preceded three-straight bogeys before shooting par on nine of her final 10 holes.
Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) was two strokes behind Tobia to finish the first day in 39th place. Lambrou was even on four of her first five holes before bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes put her at +4 for the front nine after a double-bogey on 11. The front nine proved to be grueling for the Bobcats' senior, who shot par on just four of her final nine holes.
Quinnipiac will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 26 with the second round of the Bearcat Classic before the final round on Sunday, Mar. 27.
