DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team completed the first day of the Lady Eaglecat Invitational at LPGA International in fourth place out of 14 teams. Sophomore Estafania Morales (Caracas, Venezula) and freshman Lucian Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) paced the Bobcats with a tie for 11th place out of 76 golfers.
"I'm very happy with the way we played today," head coach John O'Connor said. "I'm thrilled to have Estefania Morales back and for her to shoot a 79 to start a season should be a great boost to her confidence, and also to the confidence of the team. I'm very optimistic - Jenn Whaley came through with a nice round today, as well as Julia Kemmling. Luciana Tobia always proves to be a high quality golfer. We're looking forward tomorrow - we're in the mix and I'm hopeful that everything will work out."
Host schools Winthrop (307, +15) and Bethune-Cookman (308, +16) took the top two spots in the 14-team field, followed by Towson (310, +18). Quinnipiac's "B" team (322, +30) finished fourth, followed by Florida Atlantic (324, +32), Sacred Heart (325, +33), Towson "B" (331, +39), Monmouth (339, +47), Lehigh (340, +48), Wisconsin-Green Bay and Hartford (341, +49), Delaware State (353, +61), Quinnipiac "A" (358, +66) and Long Island-Brooklyn (384, +92).
Morales made her 2015-16 debut on Monday afternoon after rejoining the Bobcats for the start of the second semester. Last season, Morales ranked among the national leaders in Fairways Hit while also breaking the program's single-season record. In the process, the Bobcats' most accurate player off the tee also tied senior captain Jenn Whaley's (Avon, Connecticut) freshman record for birdies.
At the Lady Eaglecat Invitational, Morales picked up where she left off as she was one of 15 players in the field to card multiple birdies for the day. Morales two birdies, helped her to a 79 (+6) for the day. Tobia entered the tournament with a team-leading 78.77 scoring average. The first-year Bobcat also birdied twice on her way to a 79 (+6) and a tie with Morales for 11th place.
Whaley and freshman Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) both shot an opening round 82 (+9) to finish tied for 27th place to round-out the Bobcats' Team B top scorers. Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) was Team A's top scorer, finishing with an 85 (+12).
The Bobcats will complete the Lady Eaglecat Invitational on Tuesday, Mar. 15.
