PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The defending national champion Quinnipiac women's rugby team clicked on all cylinders as it captured a 77-7 road win over Brown on Saturday afternoon, improving to 5-0 this season and extending its winning streak to 11 dating back to last year.
Junior center Flora Poole had three tries to lead a balanced Quinnipiac offense that saw six different players score its first six tries. Senior flanker Tayler Schussler (pictured), senior flanker Hailey Wyatt and junior center Ilona Maher each added two. The Bobcats also continued a remarkable run of dominance since trailing 19-17 at the half at Army in its season opener on Sept. 1. Since then, the Bobcats have outscored their opponents by a combined 230-15.
The Bobcats got off to a quick start early in the match, as sophomore wing Emily Roskopf converted a try off an assist from senior fullback Maggie Myles, which was quickly followed by junior scrum half Mason Johnson finding the try zone on an assist from Wyatt. Wyatt added a conversion on the first try, and senior prop/lock Madison Gegeckas tacked on another one on the second to make the score 14-0.
Quinnipiac continued its early onslaught as junior center Flora Poole scored off an assist from Johnson, and Wyatt followed, scoring off a pass from freshman center Meg Rose to stretch the lead to 24-0. Senior flanker Tayler Schussler made it five different players scoring the first five tries when she scored off a feed from Maher to make the score 29-0.
The offense continued to see multiple players get involved, as sophomore wing Caitria Sands became the sixth different player to score the first six tries, scoring off a pass from junior wing Rebecca Haight. Poole became the first player on the Bobcats with two tries as she roamed in from 50 yards to extend the lead to 41-0, and then quickly scored again for her third try to make the score 46-0.
Wyatt added her second try, and freshman eight Mikah Maples converted her first to give Quinnipiac a commanding 56-0 lead, before Brown was finally able to end its scoreless drought with a try to close to 56-7. Maher closed out the match with two tries, sandwiched around the second try of the day from Schussler, to make the final score 77-7.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it travels cross country for a big match with Central Washington at 3 p.m. Central Washington was the last team to defeat the Bobcats, earning a 33-12 win in Hamden last fall before Quinnipiac bounced back to win its final six matches, including the national championship win over Army.
