STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) scored a career high five goals and Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 13 saves on Tuesday night, but the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team suffered a 17-9 setback in a midweek clash with Stony Brook at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Last year, Quinnipiac and Stony Brook were all square midway through the fourth quarter when Ryan Keenan (Oshawa, Ontario) broke the deadlock to help the Bobcats claim a 12-11 victory. It was the biggest non-conference road win in recent memory.
This time around revenge was in store, as the Seawolves held serve on its home turf to pick up its eighth win of the season. Arguably Quinnipiac's toughest stretch of the season, the Bobcats faced an opponent in the national polls for the second time in four days.
Feldman scattered his goals throughout the entire game, scoring once in each quarter and twice in the fourth. Matt Kycia (West Hartford, Conn.) also sported a career high in the game, tallying a goal and two assists for his first three-point game of his career.
Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) and Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) had multipoint games as well. Sagl dished out three assists, extending his point streak to 41 straight games. Corcoran had a pair of assists.
Four other Bobcats recorded a point, Connor Meth (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Nate Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md.) and Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each scoring a goal, and Keenan handing out an assist. Lawson's marker was the first of his career.
Quinnipiac fell behind early in this one, needing to overcome deficits of 3-1 and 6-2 in the first half. Midway through the second quarter though, Quinnipiac began to click offensively. Nibbelink sparked a 4-0 Bobcats run with an unassisted goal at the 7:58 mark, followed by tallies from Feldman, Lawson and Kycia to bring the score even, 6-6. Stony Brook snapped the streak with a goal just before the halftime whistle, leaving a 7-6 advantage for the home team at the break.
Notorious for a high scoring offense on a yearly basis, Stony Brook's offensive prowess reared its head in the third quarter and carried into the fourth. The Seawolves scored three straight to open the third frame before Feldman stopped the bleeding with his third goal of the game.
Quinnipiac cut its deficit to three, 11-8, with 14:45 remaining in regulation, but a 5-0 run for the home team put the game out of reach. Stony Brook claimed a 7-1 edge on the faceoff in the fourth quarter, leading to a 22-7 advantage for the game.
Brust was stellar in net for the Bobcats, registering double-digit saves for the sixth time this season. He ranks among the national leaders in saves per game and corralled his 100th career save in the first quarter.
Stony Brook, now 8-2 on the season, was led by Mike Rooney who finished with four goals and three assists. Brody Eastwood had six goals and Matt Schultz and Alex Corpolongo each had three points.
Quinnipiac resumes MAAC play on Saturday, April 4 with a crucial game against Manhattan College. Faceoff is set for 8 p.m. at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
