NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team picked up a pair of individual victories in qualifying matches at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by Yale University Thursday afternoon but could not advance into the main draw and meet two more of their Bobcats' teammates.
Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) each won one match in the qualifying round but fell just short of picking up a second win.
Kuwert, one of the seeded players of the qualifying round, cruised past Army West Point's Caison Best in his first round match, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. With a spot in the main draw on the line, Kuwert nearly forced a third set but came up just short in the tiebreaker against host Yale's Photos Photiades, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Kuwert wraps up the fall season with seven wins, going 7-5 overall with a 4-2 mark in singles play.
Rozenstein also faced an Army West Point Black Knight in Austin McCasin in the first round of qualifying as Rozenstein dominated the first set before holding on to take the match, 6-1, 7-5. In the second round, Rozenstein drew Princeton's Jimmy Wasserman in the second round of play, but came up short in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Rozenstein picked up his 17th win of the season and 11th singles victory to improve his overall record to 17-8.
Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) was the Bobcats' third competitor of the qualifying round where he also nearly forced a third set with Boston University's Jay Leelavanich but lost in the second set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Even with the loss, van Biezen remains an impressive 22-8 overall, tied for the team lead in wins while already tying his single-season career high for singles wins with 13.
Several Quinnipiac men's tennis players will still be in action on Friday as main draw singles and doubles get underway. Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) will face Binghamton's Sid Hazarika and Frenk Kote in the morning before singles gets underway. Zaretsky will also be in action in singles where he will face Princeton's Luke Gamble and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) will face Photiades, who defeated Kuwert in qualifying.
