Barlow Scores Bobcats' Lone Goal
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Penn State, 4-1, in a non-conference match-up in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Bobcats fall to 3-9 on the year while Penn State improves to 5-5.
Quinnipiac sophomore Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) picked up her first points of the season with the Bobcats' only goal of the game. Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania) set-up Barlow with the tally for her third assist of the year. Shemo now has a point in three of the Bobcats' last four games including back-to-back games with an assist.
Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) had 10 saves in the game including seven in the first half and the last three shots she saw in the contest. Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) recorded her NCAA Division I-leading 12th save of the year while Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey) picked her fourth defensive stop of the year. Belskie entered the game ranked sixth in the country in the category. Quinnipiac currently leads the country with 19 defensive saves for the year.
Two minutes into the game, PSU's Gina Bramley scored on a reverse sweep into the back corner of the goal to give the Nittany Lions the early lead. Bramley's goal was the third of the year and set Quinnipiac into an early hole. Barlow neutralized Penn State's advantage with her first goal of the season six minutes later. Shemo dribbled the ball deep and then fed Barlow with a pass along the goal line.
Stephanie Hussey then scored the first of her two goals in the game to give Penn State the lead, which it would not relinquish. Hussey took a pass from Brooke Biroski and tipped it past Conaboy to give PSU a 2-1 lead. Biroski then scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season four minutes later on a penalty stroke to give Penn State a 3-1 lead just 15 minutes into the game.
Conaboy stopped the next five shots on goal that she saw in the first half while King also came up big with a defensive save with six minutes left in the first frame. Coming out of halftime, Conaboy was tested early but denied Carly Celkos' bid off a corner set. Play ran back-and-forth over the next eight minutes before Hussey struck again for her fifth goal of the year. Penn State threatened again but Belskie made a great play for the defensive save. In the closing minute of regulation, Penn State grabbed another corner, but Kate Dembrowski's first opportunity was blocked by a Quinnipiac defensive play before Conaboy turned away Penn State's last attempt in the closing seconds of play.
The Bobcats sit idle for a week before hosting Bryant for its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up of the season on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m. The Bobcats then host Providence on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Connecticut.
