WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second consecutive year the Quinnipiac men's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against the Army Black Knights. On a wet Clinton Field in West Point, neither side was able to score through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. With the tie, Bobcat goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) registered his first shutout of the season and 15th of his career.
The first half was a defensive stalemate as both teams relied on their back four and respective goalkeepers. Both squads evenly controlled the ball throughout the first 45 minutes with few chances to score. Each side recorded three shots apiece, but neither team were able to put the ball on net.
Early in the second half, senior Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) had the best chance at a Bobcat goal. Receiving the ball inside the box, Baker took two dribbles and fired a strike just wide of the near post.
With one minute remaining in the final overtime, James Greco (Long Valley, N.J.) took a free kick from close to midfield and nearly snuck the ball inside the post. What was intended as a pass to several Bobcats inside the box, almost ended the contest but went just wide and out of play.
Greco led Quinnipiac with four shots while Baker and junior Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) each added two. Both goalkeepers tallied three saves.
With the result, Quinnipiac remains unbeaten in the all-time series with the Black Knights (3-0-2). The first meeting between the two clubs was back in 2004 where the Bobcats scored in overtime to claim a 1-0 victory in Hamden.
