PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite five saves from junior goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.), the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team was defeated by Brown University, 2-0, on Tuesday night from Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.
With the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule well underway, this mid-season non-conference clash gave head coach Dave Clarke a chance to mix things up a bit while resting some players as well. Freshman Carly Glaser (New City, N.Y.) picked up her first career nod, while Ashley Wendland (Hamden, Conn.) and Jillian Consolini (Suffield, Conn.) notched their second and fourth career starts, respectively.
"I was happy with the performance, but disappointed with the result," said Clarke. "We managed to get a lot of our younger players into the game to gain experience, which could help us with our upcoming MAAC schedule."
Facing a talented club out of the Ivy League, Quinnipiac was in for a challenge from the opening whistle. Brown, who improved to 5-4-2 overall, has built an impressive resume thus far with wins over St. John's, Delaware and UMass.
Fresh off a grueling game against Columbia on Saturday, the Bears opened the scoring summary in the fifth minute of play when a series of passes in Bobcats' territory resulted in the game's first goal. Ella Warshauer was on the backend of the cross, which came in from the right side of the field off the foot of Sarah Cobb. Warshauer received the pass, got in behind the Bobcat backline and buried her first goal of the season. Mikela Waldman was also credited with an assist after finding Cobb on the wing.
Some 10 minutes later, Brown struck again when Sydney Calas scored her second goal of the season. A similar build up to the Bears' first goal, Waldman found room down the right side and whipped a ball into the penalty box. Calas timed her run perfectly and deflected a shot up and over the outstretched arms of Grodzki for the 2-0 lead.
The two goals proved to be enough for Brown, but the Bobcats did fight through the final whistle. Amanda Barroca (Bellmore, N.Y.), a substitute off the bench in the 36th minute, provided a spark by generating several chances down the right wing while Sarah Pandolfi (North Haven, Conn.) had a couple of her own as well. Quinnipiac also had a chance denied by a sliding save from the Bears' goalkeeper Rylee Shumway two minutes into the second half.
For the game, Quinnipiac held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks while surrendering an 11-5 edge in shots. Grodzki's counterparts, Mallory Yant and Shumway combined to make two saves in the win. Yant picked up the win and improved to 4-4-2 on the season.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a crucial MAAC game at Rider. With four of Quinnipiac's six remaining conference games on the road, grabbing at least a point is vital for the Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrence Township, N.J.
