Bobcats Split Saturday Home Doubleheader With Canisius

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team fell split in its doubleheader against MAAC foe Canisius, taking game one, 5-2, before dropping game two, 15-9, on Saturday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.
With the split, the Bobcats moved to 6-15 on the season and 1-1 in the MAAC, while the Golden Griffins moved to 10-13 on the campaign with the split and 2-3 in the MAAC.
GAME ONE: QU 5, Canisius 2
The two sides remained scoreless through the first two frames before the Bobcats yielded a solo homer to Canisius to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead. QU was able to hold Canisius at bay until surrendering a second run in the fifth to push ahead 2-0.
QU responded with four runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, Canisius pitcher Matt Duffy balked to score a QU run. Later in the at-bat, Kyle Maves struck out but the ball got past the catcher, allowing another run to score and putting runners on second and third. Jared Zimbardo followed with an infield RBI single to put Quinnipiac ahead 3-2 in the inning. Later in the inning an error on the Canisius catcher allowed Maves to score, extending Quinnipiac's lead to 4-2.
The Bobcats added a run in the sixth off a sacrifice fly from Keegan O'Connor to extend the lead to 5-2, before holding on for the eventual 5-2 victory.
GAME TWO: Canisius 15, QU 9
Canisius struck first in the top of the first off a leadoff solo homer from Mike Destefano, followed by another run later in the frame to exit the inning with a 2-0 lead. The Golden Griffins added a run in the third and two in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-0.
QU fought back in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Sebastian Mueller dropped down a bunt for an infield single. The pitcher threw the ball away on the play, allowing both runs to score on the play to trim the Canisius lead to 5-2. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Gianni Arici dropped down an RBI bunt single to cut QU's deficit to 5-3.
Canisius responded with five runs of its own in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-3. Trailing 15-5 in the ninth, QU posted four runs in the inning but the comeback attempt fell short, 15-9.

- Jared Zimbardo led the offense in game one with two hits and an RBI
- Keegan O'Connor added a hit and an RBI in game one
- Brandyn Garcia (4-3) got the start in game one and earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings of work
- Garcia struck out nine in the outing
- Anthony Ambrosino earned the save in game one after tossing three shutout innings in relief to close the game
- The save was the first of the season for Ambrosino
- Ambrosino tallied four strikeouts in the appearance
- Sebastian Mueller and Gianni Arici led the offense in game two with a hit and an RBI apiece in the loss
- Michael Kohn went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two
- Sam LaChance went 1-for-1 with a solo homer and two RBIs in game two
- Kevin Seitter (0-5) got the start in game two and took the loss after allowing five runs in four innings of work
- The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 3 when they close their three-game series against Canisius
- First pitch is set for 9 a.m. from the Quinnipiac Baseball Field
